How often should you replace your pillow? How to tell it's done

Updated October 2026.
Short answer: plan on one to three years. Most experts recommend replacing your pillow every one to two years, and a high-quality pillow lasts two to three years with daily use. The surest way to know is the fold test: fold the pillow in half and let go. If it doesn't spring back, it's done. If it has gone flat, lumpy or yellowed, it's also time for a new one.
How long does a pillow last?
A good-quality pillow usually lasts two to three years if you sleep on it every night. How long yours lasts depends on three things: the filling, how often it's washed and how much weight it carries. According to the Sleep Foundation, most experts recommend replacing your pillow every one to two years.
A mattress tells you when it starts to sag. A pillow is harder to judge, because it wears slowly and you get used to it night by night. That's why many pillows stay on the bed far longer than they should.
The filling makes a big difference. The Sleep Foundation gives different guidelines for different materials:
| Filling | Replace after | Washing |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic (polyester) | 6 months to 2 years | Follow the care label |
| Down and feather | 1 to 3 years | Every three to six months |
The range is wide because quality varies. A basic synthetic pillow can be flat after six months, while a pillow with better filling and regular washing lasts longer. A Funky Dream is filled with siliconised hollow polyester fibre, has a 100% cotton cover and can be washed at 60°C. For a high-quality pillow we count on two to three years of daily use.
How do you know a pillow is worn out?
The pillow tells you itself, if you know what to look for. The Sleep Foundation names three clear signs: the pillow sinks, it turns lumpy and it yellows. One of them is enough.
- It's flat. The pillow no longer fills the gap between your head and the mattress, and you fold it double to get some height.
- It's lumpy. The filling has bunched up and left empty patches you can feel with your hand.
- It has yellowed. Stains and yellowing stay even after washing.
- It doesn't regain its shape. A pillow in good condition looks the same when you make the bed in the morning as when you went to sleep.
Notice how you sleep, too. If you keep turning the pillow over in the night looking for the cool, full side, it's often the pillow that has lost its shape, not you sleeping worse.
What is the fold test?
The fold test is the simplest way to see whether a pillow still gives support. You fold the pillow in half and watch whether it springs back. A pillow with lively filling unfolds by itself. A pillow that stays folded has lost its spring, and then it no longer gives your head and neck the support it should.
The Sleep Foundation describes the same test: if the pillow doesn't return to its normal shape when you fold it in half, it's time to replace it. The test works best on fibre and down pillows. You'll find it step by step further down.
Can you wash a pillow instead of replacing it?
Washing extends its life but doesn't replace a new pillow. A wash removes moisture, dust and odour and can give the filling new life, but it can't fix a pillow whose fibres have already been pressed together for good.
Wash according to the care label and let the pillow dry completely before you make the bed, so no moisture stays in the filling. A pillowcase changed every week protects the pillow between washes. You'll find more advice on temperatures and detergents in our guide to washing bed linen, and how often the rest of the bed should be changed in how often to change your bedding.
Which pillow should you choose when it's time?
Choose by how you sleep, not by the pillow you had before. The height should fill the gap between your head and the mattress so your neck lies straight, and that gap depends on your sleeping position. The full reasoning is in our guide to the right pillow for your sleeping position.
- If you sleep on your side: a high, firm pillow. A Funky Dream in 50×90 and 1300 g High is exactly the pillow ESS Group's hotels make their beds with.
- If you sleep on your back or stomach: a slightly lower, softer pillow, such as A Funky Dream in 1100 g Medium.
- If you prefer a smaller pillow: A Funky Dream in 50×60 gives the same feel in a smaller size.

How to do the fold test
- Take off the pillowcase so you feel the pillow as it is.
- Lay the pillow on the bed and fold it in half, short side to short side.
- Hold it together for a few seconds and let go.
- Look. If the pillow unfolds by itself, it's still good. If it stays folded, it's done.
- Check at the same time whether it's flat, lumpy or yellowed. One of the signs is enough to replace it.

Frequently asked questions
How often should you replace your pillow?
Most experts recommend replacing it every one to two years, and a high-quality pillow lasts two to three years with daily use. Do the fold test: if the pillow doesn't spring back when you fold it in half, it's time for a new one.
Can you wash an old pillow instead of buying a new one?
Washing extends its life and freshens the pillow, but it can't restore filling that has been pressed together. If the pillow is still flat or lumpy after washing, it has done its job.
Should both pillows be replaced at the same time?
It's usually easiest. Pillows bought together wear at about the same rate, and two new pillows give the same height on both sides of the bed. Take two of the same from us and you also get 10% off the pair.
Which pillow do the hotels use?
ESS Group's hotels make their beds with the A Funky Dream hotel pillow in 50×90 and 1300 grams. It's the same pillow Boe Leisure sells, tried by guests night after night through twenty years of Nordic hospitality.
Our advice
Do the fold test tonight. If the pillow stays folded, it has done its job, and it's worth replacing before the next night instead of getting used to poorer sleep. Choose the height by how you sleep and a filling that can be washed at 60°C, and the new pillow will last. If you want to sleep like at the hotel, the A Funky Dream hotel pillow in 1300 g is the pillow ESS Group's hotels make their beds with. Take two of the same and get 10% off the pair, with free shipping on two or more items.
