Down or feather mattress topper: what is the difference?

Short answer: a down mattress topper is softer, lighter and airier. A feather mattress topper is firmer and more supportive, because each feather has a quill that gives it spring. Most toppers are a blend, and the percentage on the label decides how it feels. If you want a soft surface but still want to lie on top of the bed, a feather topper with some down is a safe choice.

What is the difference between down and feather in a mattress topper?

The difference is in the filling itself. Down is the soft, fluffy layer beneath a bird's outer feathers, with no stiff quill. A feather has a quill running through it, and that quill is what makes the filling spring back when you lie down.

According to Wikipedia (Swedish), down has no quill or only a weak one, insulates heat very well and is extremely light. That is why down feels like a cloud while feather feels like a full, supportive layer.

In practice, the maker states the blend as a percentage. The Cody Lamont Feather Mattress Topper holds 10% duck down and 90% duck feather inside a 100% cotton cover. It is 10 cm deep and is found at selected ESS destinations. The result is a bed that feels soft on the surface but keeps its shape beneath you.

How do down, feather and a blend feel?

The more down, the softer and airier. The more feather, the more structure. Use the table as a guide when you read the label.

Filling Feel Support Suits you if you
Mostly down Soft, light and enveloping Lower, you sink in more want to feel tucked in and like to sleep a little warmer
Half down, half feather Soft surface with some support Medium want softness without sinking all the way down
Mostly feather, for example 10% down and 90% feather Full, steady and springy Higher, you lie on top want to soften a firm mattress but keep its support

A topper does not replace the support of your mattress. It softens and evens out the surface. How it fits in with the other layers is covered in Build the perfect bed layer by layer.

Does "fjäderbäddmadrass" mean feathers or springs?

In Swedish the word "fjäder" means both a feather and a spring, which is why the search can be confusing. In a mattress topper it almost always means bird feathers, a soft filling. When Swedes talk about "fjädrar" in a mattress, they usually mean metal springs, as in a spring mattress.

A feather topper is a soft layer that goes on top of the mattress. A spring mattress is the mattress itself, the part that carries you. For the difference between a topper and a mattress protector, read Mattress protector and mattress topper.

How do you care for a down and feather mattress topper?

Shake it, air it and protect it. Many down and feather toppers cannot be washed at home, and the Cody Lamont Feather Mattress Topper cannot be washed at all. That is why the layer on top makes all the difference.

  • Shake the filling when you change the sheets, so the down and feather spread evenly again.
  • Air it outdoors or by an open window on a dry day every now and then.
  • Put a mattress protector on top. The Paisley Briggs Mattress Protector is polyester and washes at 40 degrees on a delicate cycle, so you wash the protector instead of the topper.
  • Wash the sheet hot. 1177, the Swedish public health service, notes that dust mites live mainly in the bed and advises people with dust mite allergy to wash sheets at 60 degrees.

If you have a down duvet or pillow that can be washed, the steps are in How to wash a down duvet and pillow.

Is a down or feather topper right if you have allergies?

If you are allergic to feather or down, a different filling is a better choice. If you have a dust mite allergy, a topper that cannot be washed may be a weaker choice unless you protect it well.

A washable mattress protector on top can reduce how much dust and moisture reaches the filling. Read more at 1177 and ask your doctor if you are unsure. To build the whole bed with allergies in mind, see Allergy friendly bedding.

How to choose a down or feather mattress topper

  1. Notice what is missing. If your mattress feels hard, you want to soften the surface. If you already sink in too far, you need a firmer mattress instead.
  2. Read the percentage. More down gives softness, more feather gives structure. To lie on top of the bed, choose a blend that is mostly feather.
  3. Pick the right size. The topper should cover the mattress completely. Cody Lamont comes in 160×200 and 180×200.
  4. Plan the protection. Put a washable mattress protector on top if the topper cannot be washed.
  5. Use a sheet that reaches. A topper makes the bed deeper, so check that your bottom sheet or fitted sheet wraps around both mattress and topper.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wash a feather mattress topper?

It depends on the model, so check the care label. The Cody Lamont Feather Mattress Topper cannot be washed. Protect it with a washable mattress protector on top instead, air it now and then and shake the filling when you change the sheets.

What does 10% down and 90% feather mean?

The numbers show how the filling is split between down and feather. A lot of feather gives a full, steady bed where you lie on top. More down gives a lighter, softer feel where you sink in more.

Is a down topper warmer than a feather topper?

It can feel warmer. Down insulates heat very well, so the larger the share of down, the more warmth the bed holds. If you sleep hot, a mostly feather blend and a cool percale sheet may suit you better.

Is a feather mattress topper the same as a spring mattress?

No. A feather topper is a soft layer filled with bird feathers that you place on top of the mattress. A spring mattress is the mattress itself, with metal springs that support the body.

Should the mattress protector go over the topper?

Yes, if the topper cannot be washed. The protector then takes the moisture and dirt, and the protector is what you wash. The Paisley Briggs Mattress Protector washes at 40 degrees on a delicate cycle.

Our advice

Start by asking what your bed is missing. If the mattress is hard but the support is good, a soft layer on top is usually enough. That is where we think a topper that is mostly feather with some down does the most good: soft against the body, yet it lets you stay on top. It is why we chose the Cody Lamont Feather Mattress Topper, with a washable mattress protector on top. You will find it among our mattress toppers.
