Make Your Bed Like a Hotel: How to Build the Hotel Bed at Home

Short answer: to make your bed like a hotel, build it in layers: a mattress topper that evens things out, a mattress protector on top, a flat sheet pulled tight with hospital corners, an airy duvet in a smooth duvet cover and pillows standing up against the headboard. The hotel feeling lives in the order and the handling, not in one expensive purchase.

What makes a hotel bed different?

Three things separate a hotel bed from the one at home: the layers, the tension and the care. A hotel room is made up with more layers than most homes, each layer is laid smooth and taut, and everything is changed and washed between guests. The result is the feeling you remember: cool and crisp against the skin, soft beneath you, a duvet that settles close without weighing you down.

None of this is a hotel secret. Most of it is about order and taking an extra minute when you make the bed. The rest is about choosing the right pillow and the right duvet, because that is where the sleeping actually happens.

Which layers do you need to make a bed like a hotel?

Six layers, from the bottom up. You do not need all of them every night, but these six build the hotel bed.

Layer What it does Our pick
1. Mattress topper Evens out the mattress and gives the soft, deep feel Cody Lamont Feather Mattress Topper
2. Mattress protector Protects the topper and can be washed Paisley Briggs Mattress Protector
3. Flat sheet The smooth, crisp surface you lie on Ralph Flat Sheet in percale
4. Duvet and cover Warmth without weight A Funky Dream Hotel Duvet
5. Pillows and pillowcases Neck support and height in the bed A Funky Dream Hotel Pillow
6. Throw or bedspread Frames the bed and adds an extra layer for cool evenings Optional, ideally in a calm colour

The pillow and duvet are what ESS Group's hotels themselves make their beds with, A Funky Dream with the pillow in its 1,300 g version. The Cody Lamont topper is used at selected ESS destinations. The flat sheet is Boe's own bedding, Ralph in crisp percale. We walk through the whole build in Build the perfect bed layer by layer.

How do you get the sheet as taut as in a hotel?

With a flat sheet and hospital corners. A flat sheet (not a fitted one) can be pulled tighter, and the corners are folded so the fabric lies flat even after a night.

Lay the sheet in the middle of the bed with the same amount of fabric on both sides. Tuck the foot end under the mattress. Then lift the hanging edge at the corner so it forms a triangle against the bed, tuck in the fabric hanging below the triangle and fold the triangle back down. Tuck in the rest along the side. Repeat on the other side and finish by pulling the sheet firmly towards the head end before tucking it in.

Percale keeps its crisp surface best when it sits taut. If you prefer the simpler route, a fitted sheet is a good alternative, but it never gets quite as smooth.

Which pillow and duvet do hotels use?

At ESS Group's destinations the rooms are made up with the A Funky Dream Hotel Pillow at 1,300 g and the A Funky Dream Hotel Duvet. Both are filled with allergy-friendly siliconised fibre in a cotton cover and can be washed at 60 °C, a deliberate choice where bedding is washed often.

The pillow is high and firm, made to stand up against the headboard and keep its shape night after night. The duvet is fluffy and cool. For the same feel as the hotel double bed, choose the duvet in 230×220 and share it between two. More on how the hotels think in Which pillow do hotels use?

How do you keep a hotel bed fresh?

By changing and washing more often than you may be used to. Hotels change between every guest. At home it goes a long way to change pillowcases and sheets every week and duvet covers every other week. 1177, the Swedish healthcare guide, recommends washing sheets at 60 °C and washing pillows and duvets at 60 °C regularly, especially if someone in the household is sensitive to dust mites.

Air the duvet and pillow for a while in the morning before making the bed. It lets the moisture from the night escape and gives the filling back its loft. How often each part should be changed is covered in How often should you change your bedding?

How to make your bed like a hotel

  1. Lay the topper centred on the mattress and let the filling settle for a moment.
  2. Pull the mattress protector over the topper so it sits smooth without creases. A feather topper cannot be washed, so the protector does the work.
  3. Stretch the flat sheet and fold hospital corners at the foot end. Pull the sheet firmly towards the head end before tucking it in.
  4. Shake the duvet so the filling spreads evenly, put on the cover and lay it smooth with the same overhang on both sides.
  5. Fold the duvet down a hand's width at the head end so the sheet shows. It is the hotel signature.
  6. Shake the pillow, dress it in a pillowcase in the same weave as the bedding set and stand it against the headboard.
  7. Finish with the throw folded in a straight line across the foot end and one last smoothing of the whole surface.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a bed like a hotel?

Build it in layers: mattress topper, mattress protector, a tightly stretched flat sheet with hospital corners, an airy duvet in a smooth cover and pillows standing against the headboard. Fold the duvet down a hand's width at the head end and finish with a throw across the foot.

Which pillow do hotels use?

ESS Group's hotels use the A Funky Dream Hotel Pillow in the 1,300 g version, a high, firm fibre pillow that can be washed at 60 °C. The same pillow can be ordered home.

Should the mattress protector go under or over the topper?

Over. The topper lies closest to you and takes up moisture during the night, and a feather topper cannot be washed. A protector on top keeps it clean and can be washed separately.

What is a hospital corner?

A way of folding the corner of a sheet so the fabric lies flat and taut. You lift the hanging edge into a triangle, tuck the fabric underneath and fold the triangle back down. It works with flat sheets, not fitted ones.

How often do hotels change bedding?

Between every guest. At home it is enough to change pillowcases and sheets every week and duvet covers every other week, and to wash pillows and duvets at 60 °C at regular intervals.

Our advice

Start with the pillow and duvet. That is where the hotel feeling lives, and they are the two pieces the hotels themselves chose through twenty years of Nordic hospitality, tested by guests night after night. Then add a crisp flat sheet and take an extra minute for the hospital corners. To put the whole bed together at once, you can build your bed step by step, or start with A Funky Dream.
