What Is Hotel Bedding? How Hotel Beds Differ From the One at Home

Updated September 2026.
Short answer: hotel bedding is bedding built for professional use. It has to withstand frequent washing at high temperatures, keep its shape night after night and feel just as cool and crisp after a hundred washes as after the first. It is not a style, it is a standard: dense cotton weaves, pillows and duvets in fibre that can be washed at 60 °C, and a bed built in layers.
What is meant by hotel bedding?
Hotel bedding is bedding made to handle a hotel's everyday life. A hotel room changes bedding between every guest, and everything is washed at high temperatures. That sets demands ordinary bedding rarely has to meet: weaves that soften rather than wear, fibres that do not pill, pillows and duvets that keep their shape and loft even though they are washed again and again.
So the word is more a promise of durability and feel than a description of a particular pattern. White, smooth cotton bedding is the most common in hotels, but what makes it hotel bedding is that it lasts.
What do hotels actually use?
At ESS Group's destinations, among them Maryhill Estate, the rooms are made up with the A Funky Dream Hotel Pillow in its 1,300 g version and the A Funky Dream Hotel Duvet. Both are filled with allergy-friendly siliconised fibre in a cotton cover and can be washed at 60 °C. Fibre is a deliberate choice where thousands of guests with different sensitivities need to sleep well: it can be kept hygienically clean and keeps its shape wash after wash.
Those are the two pieces we can say with certainty the hotels use. The rest of Boe's range, such as the percale and Supima bedding sets, is Boe's own bedding, chosen to complete the bed. See all destinations and what they make their beds with.
Why does the hotel bed feel better than the one at home?
Three things, and none of them is magic. The layers: a mattress topper that evens things out, crisp bedding, a duvet with the right weight. The care: freshly washed and tightly made, every time. The pillow: the right height and firmness, replaced before it loses its shape.
At home the same pillow often stays for many years and bedding is washed at lower temperatures. That is not wrong, but it is where the difference appears. All of it can be recreated at home, and we show how in Make your bed like a hotel.
Hotel standard versus typical home standard
| Hotel standard | Typical at home | |
|---|---|---|
| Weave | Dense, smooth cotton that withstands many washes | Blended weaves, varying quality |
| Washing | Changed between every guest, high temperature | Often 40 °C, less frequently |
| Pillow | Even firmness, replaced before it loses shape | Rarely replaced, loses support |
| Duvet | Washable at 60 °C, fluffy | Rarely washed, goes lumpy |
| Bed making | In layers, tight and smooth | Quick, often with a fitted sheet |
What should you look for when buying hotel bedding?
Look at filling, weave, washing temperature and certification, not at the word "hotel" in the product name. Plenty of bedding is called hotel bedding without being made for hotel use.
- Pillow and duvet: washable at 60 °C. 1177, the Swedish healthcare guide, recommends washing pillows and duvets at 60 °C regularly if you are sensitive to dust mites, the same temperature hotels use.
- Pillow fill weight: a hotel pillow is high and firm. The hotels use A Funky Dream at 1,300 g in 50×90.
- Fibre in the weave: long cotton fibre gives a smoother, stronger thread. Thread count says less than fibre, read more in Thread count explained.
- Certification: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means the textile is tested for harmful substances. Boe's percale and Supima bedding sets are OEKO-TEX certified.
Can you buy the hotels' bedding?
Yes. That is the whole idea of Boe Leisure: the same pillow and the same duvet as at ESS Group's hotels, ordered to your home, with delivery throughout the EU and to Norway and free shipping above an order threshold shown at checkout. The pillow and duvet have been tested by guests night after night through twenty years of Nordic hospitality. Alongside them are Boe's own bedding sets: Ralph in crisp percale and Regency Lee in soft Supima cotton.
How to create the hotel bed at home
- Replace the pillow first. Choose a high, firm pillow that withstands 60 °C. It is the single biggest difference.
- Choose a duvet you can wash at 60 °C, in the right size. Two people sharing one large 230×220 duvet get the hotel feel in a double bed.
- Add a mattress topper with a mattress protector on top for the soft, even surface.
- Dress the bed in cotton, percale if you sleep warm and Supima if you want the softest.
- Make the bed tight with hospital corners and fold the duvet down a hand's width at the head end.
- Wash often and hot, and replace the pillow before it has lost its shape.
Frequently asked questions
What is hotel bedding?
Bedding built for professional use: it withstands frequent washing at high temperatures, keeps its shape and feels just as cool and crisp after many washes. Pillows and duvets in fibre that can take 60 °C and smooth cotton weaves are typical.
What do hotels use?
At ESS Group's destinations the rooms are made up with the A Funky Dream Hotel Pillow in the 1,300 g version and the A Funky Dream Hotel Duvet, both in allergy-friendly fibre that can take 60 °C.
Can you buy the hotels' bedding?
Yes. Boe Leisure sells the same pillow and duvet as at ESS Group's hotels, with delivery throughout the EU and to Norway. Alongside them are Boe's own bedding sets in percale and Supima.
Why are hotel duvets so fluffy?
They are washed and dried often, which lifts the filling, and they are shaken when the bed is made. A fibre duvet that withstands 60 °C keeps its loft through many washes.
Is hotel bedding allergy-friendly?
Pillows and duvets in siliconised fibre that can take 60 °C are a good choice if you are sensitive to dust mites, since they can be washed hot. More in our guide to allergy-friendly bedding.
Our advice
Let the word "hotel" be a standard, not a label. Start with what makes the biggest difference, the pillow and duvet, and choose them by how they handle washing and keep their shape. If you want exactly what the hotels use, start with A Funky Dream. To read on about the whole range, see our guide to the best bedding in 2026.
