Swedish and European bedding sizes: the complete guide

Updated September 2026.
Short answer: the standard duvet size in Sweden is 150×210 cm, and double duvets come in 220×220, 230×220 and 240×220 cm. Denmark uses 140×200 cm, Germany 135×200 cm and the UK has its own sizes, where king size is 230×220 cm. When you buy bedding across borders, it is the size of the duvet, not the bed, that decides which duvet cover fits.
Anyone who has moved, bought a bed abroad or ordered bedding from another country knows that duvets are not the same size everywhere in Europe. The differences are small, but a few centimetres are enough for a cover to hang loose or refuse to close. Here are the sizes country by country, and what fits together.
What is the standard duvet size in Sweden?
The Swedish standard duvet is 150×210 cm. That is 10 cm longer than the standard duvet in several neighbouring countries. IKEA also sells 150×200 cm, slightly shorter. Double duvets come in three common sizes, 220×220, 230×220 and 240×220 cm, so always check the width. Pillows are 50×60 cm as standard and 50×90 cm in the hotel format. The full walkthrough of Swedish sizes, with duvet covers, sheets and bed sizes, is in our guide to Swedish bedding and duvet cover sizes.
What size are duvets in Denmark and Norway?
Denmark sleeps narrower: the standard duvet is 140×200 cm, with 140×220 cm as the extra-long option for tall sleepers. IKEA Denmark gives 140×200 cm as standard and the pillow as 60×70 cm, with a double duvet of 240×220 cm. In Norway, 140×200 and 140×220 cm are also the most common. A Swedish 150×210 cover works on a Danish or Norwegian 140×200 duvet; it just hangs a little more loosely.
What size are duvets in Germany and Austria?
The German standard is 135×200 cm, according to German Wikipedia on duvets, with the 155×220 cm comfort size growing in popularity. Double duvets come in 200×200, 200×220 and 240×220 cm. The pillow differs most: the classic German pillow is square, 80×80 cm, with 40×80 cm as an alternative. Austria goes its own way with 140×200 cm as the standard duvet. Scandinavian pillowcases therefore rarely fit German pillows, and vice versa.
What sizes apply in the UK?
British duvets follow the name of the bed, according to for example Yorkshire Bedding: single 135×200 cm, double 200×200 cm, king 230×220 cm and super king 260×220 cm. Worth noting is that a UK king is exactly the same size as our 230×220 cm double duvet, so a 230×220 cover fits a British king duvet straight away. British pillows have their own sizes, so check the pillowcase separately.

These are common standard sizes. Manufacturers may differ by a few centimetres, so always measure your own duvet.
Which duvet cover fits which duvet?
| Duvet | Cover that fits |
|---|---|
| 150×210 (Sweden) | 150×210 |
| 140×200 (Denmark, Norway) | 140×200, or 150×210 with a looser fit |
| 135×200 (Germany) | 135×200, or 150×210 with a looser fit |
| 230×220 (Swedish double) | 230×220 |
| 220×220 (Swedish double) | 220×220, or 230×220 with a looser fit |
| UK king 230×220 | 230×220 |
The basic rule: a cover slightly larger than the duvet works, one that is smaller does not. A cover that is too small compresses the filling and the duvet loses its loft.
Why do sizes differ between countries?
The sizes have grown out of different bed traditions. In Sweden and the rest of the Nordics, many people sleep under a duvet each even in a double bed, and the duvet has grown longer over the years. In Germany the square pillow and the narrow duvet have lived on, while the UK names the duvet after the bed it goes on. There is no common European standard, so the only safe way to buy right is to start from the duvet and pillow you actually have.
Two single duvets or one double?
In Swedish homes it is common for two people to sleep under a single 150×210 duvet each. It lets each person choose their own warmth and turn over without pulling the duvet off the other. A shared double duvet, like our 230×220, instead gives the large, unified bed you recognise from the hotel. At Maryhill, the double bed is made with one large A Funky Dream Hotel Duvet in 230×220 cm.
How to choose the right size when buying abroad
- Measure the duvet you have, width and length, rather than going by the label on the bed.
- Compare with the table above to see which country's standard your duvet follows.
- Choose a cover in the same size or slightly larger, never smaller.
- Check the pillow separately, since pillow sizes differ most between countries.
- Order a bedding set in the right size, for example Ralph or Regency Lee in 150×210 or 230×220 cm.

Our advice
Measure the duvet, not the bed, and choose a cover in the same size or slightly larger. If you live in Denmark, Norway or Germany, a Swedish 150×210 cover works on your slightly smaller duvet. If you have a British king duvet, 230×220 fits perfectly. Our bedding sets come in 150×210 and 230×220 cm, and in making the bed layer by layer we show how the rest of the bed is built.
